The Route

Dodd Wood Pay & Display car park is a good starting point for this walk, if needed there are limited layby spaces along the roadside closer to the climb up to Ullock Pike. The ascent to the base of Ullock Pike is steep and can get slippy so please do take care (image 1). At the top of the initial incline, as you reach the base of Ullock Pike, bear right heading up the fellside, along the ridgeline, up to Ullock Pike. Again, there are some steep sections to be wary of but the views along the ridge are breathtaking. You will soon reach the summit of Ullock Pike (690m).

From here, continue along the ridge. Long Side summit is marked by a simple pile of rocks. Here you are now at 734m and nearly at the highest point of the walk. Don’t forget to look at the view of Bassenthwaite Lake back along the ridge, on a clear day you can also see the mighty Skiddaw (often with its head in the clouds!). From Long Side continue along the ridge and you will soon be faced with a path bearing left and a path continuing straight ahead. On a pleasant day you could bear left here and visit Carl Side Tarn, on this occasion we continued straight ahead and soon came to the summit of Carl Side (746m).

Begin your descent, following the clearly marked path, please take care this descent is quite steep. At the White Stones bear right and make your way to meet with the forestry paths of Dodd Wood. From here you walk down, through the woods, and back to your start point.

3 Wainwrights complete, with steep climbs at times. This walk is better suited for older children who can manage the 6 mile distance and the steep sections.
