Active Cumbria: Live Longer Better

The Hiking Household are excited to announce they have developed a series of 6 trail maps led by Sir Muir Gray to enable people to live longer better, reduce the need for health and social care and reverse the effects of lockdown.

The Hiking Household maps are part of a national Live Longer Better Programme that is supported by Sport England and delivered by Active Partnerships such as Active Cumbria. It’s aim is not only to prevent the problems that have previously been blamed entirely on the ageing process, but also to enable increased activity – physical, cognitive and emotional – for people who already have one or more long term conditions, including dementia and frailty.

Each of our maps are easy to access, with regular bus routes available. They offer a range of routes from short to slightly longer, as well as a mixture of terrains. Some of the walks are pram and wheelchair accessible, others require appropriate footwear to manage the mixed terrain. There are multiple places to stop, rest and take in the scenery along the routes. All of the maps highlight benches, and other rest areas, as well as offering ideas on how to improve your physical and mental health through getting outside.

Keep your eyes peeled for Ramblers Well Being Walks for each map coming soon, a team of walk leaders will host guided walks for each of the 6 map areas. This is a perfect way to enjoy the great outdoors as well as being part of your local community.

The maps are free to download and are fantastic for all ages, young and old!
