Lambley Viaduct-South Tyne Trail

Distance

Approx 2 miles, out and back.

Parking

Lambley Viaduct South Tyne Trail Car Park NE49 0QU, alternate parking at Coanwood which is a shorter walk but doesn’t involve crossing a road.

Why we love this walk?

This walk is a lovely walk for all ages and abilities. We love that the paths are well away from any roads, so your children can run free. This walk is relatively flat and pram friendly- another reason to love this walk. We took scooters but the terrain was a little bumpy, next time we’ll definitely take bikes!

Please do take care, correct walking footwear is essential.

The Route

We parked at the Lambley Viaduct South Tyne Car Park, a free car park for many cars. This is a great starting point for this walk, although you do need to cross one road before reaching the path. Alternatively you can park at Coanwood Car Park, shorter in distance but with no road to cross. Next time we’ll definitely park here.

Leaving car park you cross the road and enter the South Tyne Trail. This straight path use to be an old railway and is fantastic for bikes. On this occasion we took our children’s scooters but the terrain was too bumpy. Next time we will definitely bring bikes. We carried on this path until we reached the mesmerising Lambley Viaduct. Here we went down some steps to see the bottom of the viaduct. On a lovely day this would be a great place to see the river. From here you have the option to do a circular route along footpath, bring you back up to Coanwood car park. We decided against this, instead turning around and retracing our steps. No map is needed you just keep following this path until you reach Lambley Viaduct.
