Why we love this walk?
Penny Rock Wood is located between Rydal Water and Grasmere, postcode: LA22 9SE. We love this walk as there are so many different places to explore from this area. The woods offer shelter on rainy days and the beached area at Lake Grasmere offers the perfect place to skim stones and play by the water. There really is so much for the whole family to enjoy here.

The Route
This woodland walk gives access to the River Rothay as well as Lake Grasmere and Rydal Water. To reach Penny Rock Wood begin at the lower White Moss car park (LA22 9SE) and follow the wide, smooth stone path out of the car park. This brings you into a meadow area with two small benches close to the riverside. The River Rothay is beautiful here, on this occasion there had been a lot of rainfall and the river had flooded the footpath. On calmer days you can stop here and enjoy the abundance of wildlife found at the River Rothay. Please note to reach Penny Rock Wood,and Grasmere, keep the river on your left hand side. Do not cross the first footbridge as this will take you towards Rydal Water and Rydal Caves (for more information on Rydal Caves click here).
Continue with the river on your left hand side and ahead is Penny Rock Wood. The path through here zigzags up an initial slope at a slight gradient. Please note wheelchair and pushchair users need to take the right hand route here, avoiding the steep slope and steps down to the Grasmere outflow bridge. Once over the bridge, you will see Lake Grasmere ahead of you. This is where we enjoyed some time by the lake and then retraced our steps back to the car, a 1.8 mile round trip in total. Perfect for little legs!
For those hoping for a longer walk you can continue walking in a clockwise direction round Lake Grasmere for approximately 1 mile until you reach the beautiful village of Grasmere.
