Why we love this walk?

This Wainwright walk is an ideal fell walk for those with children who are ready for a short scramble to the summit. My four children felt a lot of pride reaching the summit as the incline is steep! We also love this Wainwright walk for the large areas of grass that the children can play on while walking along the top, this is also a great place to stop for a picnic.

Please do take care, correct walking footwear is essential.

The Route

St Martin’s Church, Martindale is a great starting point for this walk. You can also begin this walk at St Peter’s Church, Martindale – this is where you begin for Hallin Fell.

Leaving St Martin’s Church you follow the footpath that is very noticeable from the church, be careful it is steep in parts. Follow this path upwards until you come to a gate. Here you can either turn left and follow a steep path up towards the summit, or you could go through the gate until you reach crossroads in the path. Here you turn left and head towards the summit. Be warned Steel Knotts is marked by rocks, not the typical cairns you see.

At only 340m this modest Wainwright still offers some steep sections and scrambling is needed in parts – my children loved it!

When you are ready to make your descent, head back down and return the way that you came up. This walk is perhaps better suited for children who can manage some steep climbs. Correct walking footwear is essential.
