Sandwick Footpath to Howtown

The footpath that we followed for this walk is part of the Ullswater Way and is clearly signposted throughout. You are able to join the Ullswater way at multiple places and walk for as long as you would like. On this occasion we parked at Sandwick, postcode CA11 0JS, and followed the footpath from Sandwick to Howtown.

For those who have already completed a few of our walks you will know that parking this side of the Lake District can sometimes be difficult and so I would recommend getting there early! Today the weather was very cold, we were one of the only ones on the path, so we managed to park our car, off road, very close to the start of the footpath.

We completed a two mile out and back route, turning back on ourselves when the little ones were starting to get tired. When you begin the walk at Sandwick you can’t miss the sign for Howtown, go through a few gates and you will reach Hallinhag Wood. Here you will soon see the Ullswater Way signposts, follow these and you can’t get lost.

We shall certainly be back here when the children are older as we would love to walk from Sandwick all the way to Howtown Pier – here you are also able to take a ride on the Ullswater Steamer to Glenridding. We have previously reviewed several other great family walks within the village of Glenridding.

If you have children who enjoy splashing in water, skimming stones and exploring woodlands then this is the walk for your family! It should be noted that the first 0.4 miles (ish) of this walk is pram friendly, if you wanted a very short walk down to the water with the pram then you could do this.
