The Sheepmount train loop is a lovely, easy, relatively short, walk that I have completed with a single, and double, pram. Before lockdown I hadn’t even realised you were able to get down this path to the train line! You are able to park for free in the small car park before you enter The Sheepmount, charges may apply if you park within The Sheepmount grounds.

As you walk through The Sheepmount car park the running track should be on your left, at the end of this car park there is a track signposted Hadrians Wall path. If you follow this path it will lead you all the way down to the train line, the River Eden should be on your right hand side as you are walking. We tend to then cut across the field and sit and watch the trains go by. The children LOVE this! You could also continue following the Hadrians Wall path under the train track and make your walk slightly longer.

This is a particularly good walk if the children are needing a little bit of fresh air but aren’t feeling energetic enough for a longer walk. It is also a great walk to tie in with a trip to Bitts Park playground or a quick nip into town.

It is also a wonderful walk to do while adhering to social distancing rules – we often did this during the summer of 2020 and it is very easy for everyone to keep their distance, as well as keeping local to Carlisle.
