Why we love this walk?

This is Wainwright number 16/214 for my four little ones, and the first where our youngest managed the whole distance on her own! This is an ideal fell walk for those who can’t manage a longer walk but still want all of the highs that a fell walk brings. This walk offers steep climbs, steady descents and breathtaking views at the top. If you are after a walk where your children feel like they have climbed ‘a real mountain’ then this is the perfect one for you. Please do take care on the steep ascent, correct walking footwear is essential.

The Route

Parking in the pay & display car park on Red Bank Road, next to Grasmere Garden Village, head down Red Bank Road before turning right through a gate onto a rocky footpath. There is a sign for Chapel Stile. Head up this rocky path until you see a path on your right leading up to the top of the fell, please don’t let the steepness of the path put you off. We nearly turned back here when we saw how much of a scramble it looked! However, as you walk up the path you will soon come to a stone staircase making it much easier underfoot. With lots of rests and snacks you will soon make it to the top of the climb, the summit is a short walk on your left.

This is when the climb really feels worth it, the views of Grasmere and the surrounding fells are incredible. Don’t forget to point out the car park where you parked to your children – this will soon put it into perspective just how far, and high, they have climbed :).

The return journey is much kinder underfoot, with a steady descent you soon come back into Grasmere village. Don’t forget to visit the local cafe’s in the area, we can’t visit Grasmere without popping into Heidi’s Cafe and grabbing some gingerbread from the famous Grasmere Gingerbread Shop!
