What to expect:

This small, yet lovely, aquarium is located on the edge of the Lake District in the quiet coastal town of Maryport, on the sea front at South Quay. Follow the brown Harbour/Marina tourist attraction signs through town then over to the harbourside parking area. Free parking is opposite the adventure playground. Nearest postcode is CA15 8AB

While the aquarium itself is relatively small I actually find this a huge blessing, especially when I am solo parenting and need to watch four small children at one time! I am a huge fan of any day out which allows my children to run around on their own without having to worry too much about all of the running off!

Whilst the aquarium is on the smaller side this is not to say you can’t spend most of your day enjoying all of the facilities on offer here! With daily fish feeding and talks, an incredible SeaLab where you can see many fish being cared for, a cafe on site and the Treasure Trove gift shop. There really is something for everyone – my children always enjoy the eye spy sheet that the staff hand out on arrival. Another lovely touch is that there are booster steps available to take around with you to help your little ones see into the fish tanks, my four and two year old made great use of these (see picture 2).

Having spent what felt like hours enjoying the fish displays – seeing the stingrays was certainly my little ones highlight – we headed off to mini golf. This newly refurbished 14 hole mini golf is located next to the aquarium and is free with an aquarium entry ticket. This is such an exceptional add on to the day and the 14 wacky holes kept my older children entertained for hours! This really is a must to enjoy when visiting the aquarium. We finished our day with a trip to the outdoor adventure playground which has many exciting things to enjoy for all ages, with a separate area for little ones. There are slides, climbing frames and a very popular zip wire!

So there we have it – what a wonderful family day out with my little ones! We enjoyed every second of our trip to Maryport aquarium and I have a feeling my children will be asking for another visit this summer holiday!

Don’t forget to purchase your MyCumbria Card here to receive 25% off admission. Valid for a party of up to 10 people.

A huge thank you to MyCumbria and The Lake District Coast Aquarium, Maryport for gifting The Hiking Household this fantastic day out at the aquarium, adventure playground and mini golf – we will certainly be back!
