Great Mell Fell

Wainwright number 10 for the children.

This is a fantastic walk for those wanting to complete a Wainwright fell walk without too much of a climb. While it is steep in parts, the terrain is easy going and there is no scrambling.

There is lay-by parking available for approximately 4-6 cars at the beginning of this walk, the nearest postcode is CA11 0LF. Please look below and you will find the full strava link to this walk, this will provide a more in depth route guide.

The walk itself is strenuous but more than manageable for little legs, we got caught out with a slightly slippy area -one of my children had an epic face plant into the mud.

As you begin this walk you will see a stile on your right hand side that is next to a National Trust sign, do not take this stile. Instead, continue walking and you will soon come across a second gate/stile, go over this and from here the path is relatively easy to spot and follow.

Naturally we had plenty of moaning, tears and “I can’t make it” comments along the way. I often wonder as I’m walking up to the trig point if this is really worth it? Do the children really enjoy this? Then we reach the top. Their faces full of pride and the excitement as they know what is coming next – the ‘jet pack’ sprint to the bottom. The walk/run down is ALWAYS full of laughter and smiles and by the time we reach the car they are all asking when we are going on our next adventure.

We hope you are able to enjoy this walk as a family – the views (and moans) really are worth the climb!
