Force Crag Mine, Braithwaite

What a perfect place to spend National GetOutside Day 2020!

Force Crag Mine sits above the village of Braithwaite, near Keswick. There is a very small informal car park at the beginning of this walk, near the bottom of Whinlatter pass road, however there is more parking in Braithwaite village at the Braithwaite Methodist Church – SatNav CA12 5TL.
At weekends Braithwaite school also offers parking.

Force Crag Mine is pram accessible, you follow the fully gravelled mine track all the way along (approximately 2.5 miles) until you reach Force Crag Mine, after a little explore you can then turn back on yourselves and return along the track. What makes this walk for me is the views, they are breathtaking! My children love the fact that they can run along the track without much worry, as it is all pedestrianised, and they feel like they are in the heart of the fells – without actually climbing any.

This walk is also very close to Whinlatter Forest where there is a lovely outdoor play park and refreshments if you wanted to make a full day of it. However, we prefer to take a picnic and sit by the old mine and enjoy being in amongst the fells.
