Ennerdale Water

Ennerdale Water is the most westerly lake in the Lake District National Park and thanks to its remote area it is often a very quiet place. Another huge bonus – there is a free car park at Bowness Knott, postcode CA23 3AU.

On this day we took a short bike ride down by the lake where we stopped for a picnic & a swim. There are so many routes that you are able to take when you visit Ennerdale Water, including the 2 mile Smithy Beck trail – this is what we are planning on doing when we next visit (and it is slightly less hot!!).

The 2.7 mile route that we took today followed the lakeside track and is suitable for all-terrain pushchairs. There are some steep sections in parts but they are very short, and manageable.

If you’re after a quieter, more remote place then Ennerdale Water is definitely the one.

This walk is part of the Forestry England Woodland Walks. Ennerdale is a working forest and therefore some trails can be closed at times due to forest operations, or damage caused by recent storms. For all up to date information on the trails at Ennerdale please access the Forestry England website here.
