Through our work with Discover Carlisle we have found ourselves finding out more about our hometown than ever before. You don’t have to go far to enjoy the great outdoors, in fact many of our favourite walks have been right here, on our doorstep, in Carlisle.
We started our short informative trail around Carlisle at the Tourist Information Centre in Carlisle. Here we collected a Discover Carlisle Heritage Map (small charge applies) and headed off in search of some of Carlisle’s famous landmarks. I have to say the map really did make the walk far more interesting for my children. My eldest enjoyed reading all about the history of Carlisle while my younger children loved following the trail and telling me what number on the map we were at! If you were wanting to follow this map, as we did, then there are plenty of Heritage Map’s available at the Tourist Information Centre in Carlisle or Brampton, small charge apply. They really are well worth it to keep the whole family entertained.
Having been born in Carlisle, and lived here for most of my life, I was quite shocked at just how little I knew about the history of our city! We followed the map on a 1.5 mile walk taking in some beautiful sights – the children never tire of seeing the stars on the ceiling of Carlisle Cathedral or popping into Tullie House Museum & Art Gallery. The walk itself is pram and little leg friendly and offers a fantastic opportunity to show your children the wonderful heritage of our city.
