Caerlaverock Castle

This moated castle in Dumfries & Galloway is a great place for children, and adults, to explore. There is free parking on site, postcode DG1 4RU.  The castle itself is truly breathtaking and has been very well looked after. At time of writing you are unable to enter into the castle itself, or play on the playground.

The castle grounds, shop and toilets are open (the castle remains closed).

Opening times:

1 Apr to 31 Mar:
Daily, 10am to 4pm

No booking currently required and while the castle is closed there is no admission charge.

Although you are unable to enter the castle there is still a huge amount to see, we had a wonderful walk down to the Old Castle and into Castle Wood. It is pram accessible and dog friendly.

The highlight of the trip for us was the augmented reality character trail that we were able to follow by downloading the free app on arrival (see picture above). The children followed the map, on the app, and when they reached a sign the little character ‘came to life’ on the screen and told them some very interesting facts about the castle.  Such a great way to keep little ones entertained, and educational too – which is helpful considering my eldest is currently learning about castles at school.
