Allonby to Milefortlet 21, and back, using the King Charles III England Coast Path

Distance

4 miles, from Allonby to Milefortlet 21 and back. You could continue on the Cumbrian Coastal Path to Maryport.

Why we love this walk

This is a fantastic walk for the whole family to enjoy. You are able to enjoy a trip down to the sea, and an ice cream, at Allonby beach followed by a safe bike ride (or pram walk) along the new coastal path. This route follows a popular section of the Cumbria Coastal Way and runs for a total distance of 5.5 miles from Allonby to Maryport. We love this walk as it offers so much for families to do, and allows our older children to enjoy being on their bikes whilst on a safe path.

The Route:

This route follows the King Charles III England Coast Path. For a longer walk you could begin this walk at either Allonby, or Maryport, and follow the path all the way from one village to the next. This roundtrip would be roughly ten miles on a nice, gentle and flat path.

For today’s walk we began at Allonby where we found free parking just before we entered the village. There are various places to park in Allonby and it is easy to join the England Coast Path from anywhere within this village.

Since my children are only small we decided to walk the two miles to Milefortlet 21, the remains of an old Roman fort, before heading back to the car. This is a wonderful place to visit and learn some more about Hadrian’s Wall and the Roman history of the area. The path up to Milefortlet 21 has recently been restored and is pram accessible.

This four mile roundtrip proved to be a huge success for my children as my older boys were able to safely bike along the path whilst my younger children were happy to walk. With plenty to look at, and the path being flat, this walk was hugely popular for the whole family. Don’t forget to enjoy a much needed ice cream at Allonby when you finish your walk/bike!
