Why we love this walk?
This walk is perfect for those with children who LOVE to explore. There is plenty to see to keep little ones entertained – from skimming stones in the river to exploring the exciting caves, there really are so many interesting things to see on this walk.
Please do take care, correct walking footwear is essential.

Wetheral caves, also known as St Constantine’s cells, is a series of caves constructed into the river bank above the River Eden. They offer a great place for the children to explore and let their imagination run wild!
The walk itself is a relatively easy 1 mile ramble along the river bank, we usually park by the viaduct but you could park anywhere in Wetheral and make your way down to the river bank from there. It is a fantastic family walk as the children have lots of exciting things to look out for – they are able to throw stones into the River Eden before heading into Wetheral woods!
Once in these woods you are looking out for some steps that lead you down to the caves. My children love to take a torch and look at all of the carvings, it is an amazing location overlooking the river!
Visiting Wetheral Caves is not pram friendly due to the steps, I take the baby carrier for my tiny one, but it is great for little legs as it isn’t too far and there are lots of things to keep them entertained along the way!
